EV Charger Installation
Solar-Integrated EV Charging Setup.
Charge Your EV on Sunshine, Not the Grid
If you already have a rooftop solar system, there's a good chance you're exporting surplus power to the grid every sunny day and getting a modest feed-in tariff for it. Solar-integrated EV charging lets you redirect that surplus into your car's battery instead. You still export what's left over, but first you fill up the EV.
This service is specifically about linking your existing photovoltaic (PV) solar system to a new or already-installed EV charger so the charger responds to what the panels are producing in real time.
What the Work Actually Involves
This isn't just plugging a charger into a wall near the solar inverter. The physical work typically includes:
- Installing a solar-aware EV charger (sometimes called a smart charger or solar-optimising charger) that can read the home's net energy consumption
- Fitting a current transformer (CT) clamp to your switchboard, or pairing with your existing smart meter or inverter data feed, so the charger knows how much surplus is available
- Wiring a dedicated circuit from the switchboard to the charger location (garage, carport or side of house)
- Configuring the charger's solar-priority mode and setting minimum charge thresholds so the car still charges even on overcast days if you want it to
- Testing the whole loop: solar production, house load, charger response
The charger brand and model matter here. Not every charger on the market supports solar integration properly. We specify models with genuine CT-clamp or inverter-API compatibility, rather than ones that only claim the feature in the brochure.
When This Makes Sense for a Coorparoo Home
You're a good candidate for this setup if:
- You have a rooftop solar system of around 5 kW or larger (smaller systems may not produce reliable surplus after running the house)
- Your car typically sits at home during daylight hours, even partially (working from home, a second car, or a car used mainly for evening trips)
- Your current feed-in tariff is low, making self-consumption more valuable than exporting
- You're in a detached home or a townhouse where the switchboard and parking are both on-title
In Coorparoo and the surrounding suburbs, most homes with solar installed in the last five or six years have inverters that are compatible with CT-clamp integration. Older systems (pre-2018) sometimes need a check before we can confirm compatibility.
If your parking is a long run from the switchboard (common on larger Camp Hill or Tarragindi blocks), cabling costs go up, but the solar integration itself isn't affected.
What It Typically Costs in Brisbane
For a solar-integrated EV charging setup, expect a range of roughly $2,200 to $4,000 installed, depending on:
- Charger model chosen (entry-level solar-aware chargers sit at the lower end; premium units with app control, load balancing and scheduled charging cost more)
- Cable run length from switchboard to charger
- Whether your switchboard needs a new circuit breaker or has a free slot ready to go
- Inverter brand and whether CT-clamp or API integration is the cleaner approach
A standard home EV charger installation without solar integration typically starts around $1,800. The solar-aware equipment and configuration work adds cost, usually $400 to $800 more than a basic install.
What Our Quote Covers (and What's Extra)
Typically included in a fixed quote:
- Supply and install of the solar-integrated charger
- One CT clamp and switchboard connection
- Up to 10 metres of cable run (conduit where required)
- Charger configuration and solar-priority mode setup
- Certificate of compliance (required under Queensland electrical safety regulations)
Things that may cost extra:
- Cable runs beyond 10 metres
- Conduit work along exposed brick or under a concrete slab
- Switchboard upgrades if your board is at capacity or not RCD-protected (we'll flag this in the quote, not surprise you with it on the day)
- A separate switchboard upgrade if you need three-phase power to get faster charging speeds
Is This the Right Service for Your Property?
Ask yourself three things:
- Do you have solar already installed and working? (If not, this service doesn't apply yet.)
- Is your EV usually home during the middle of the day?
- Is your current feed-in rate under about 10 cents per kWh?
If you answered yes to all three, solar integration will likely recover the extra cost within a year or two compared with grid-only charging, depending on how much you drive. If your car is mostly away during daylight hours, you might do just as well with a standard charger and a scheduled off-peak timer. We'll tell you which suits your situation honestly during the quoting visit.
A Note on Safety and Qualifications
Connecting a charger to your solar system touches both the AC electrical circuits and, through CT-clamp placement, the measurement of your solar feed. This work must be done by a licensed electrician. In Queensland, the installer also needs to issue an Electrical Safety Certificate for any new circuit.
We carry the appropriate licences and public liability insurance. We don't subcontract this work out to unknown third parties. If your solar inverter needs a firmware update or an API key set up to enable integration, we handle that on the day rather than leaving it as your homework.
If you want to check the work afterwards, the compliance certificate we issue is your record that the installation meets AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules.
Got a solar system and want to know if it's compatible? Give us a call and describe your inverter brand. We can usually tell you in a five-minute conversation whether the integration will be straightforward or whether there are any quirks to sort out first.
