EV Charger Installation

Home EV Charger Installation.

Supply and install a wall-mounted EV charger at your Brisbane home. Typical cost $1,800–$4,500. Licensed electricians, compliance certificate included.

What Home EV Charger Installation Actually Involves

When you buy an electric vehicle, the charging cable that comes in the boot is meant for emergencies, not daily use. A home wall-mounted charger (often called an EVSE, or electric vehicle supply equipment) is a permanently wired unit that sits on your garage wall, carport post, or exterior house wall and charges your car two to four times faster than a standard power point.

The physical work involves a licensed electrician running a dedicated circuit from your switchboard to the charger location, installing the wall unit, testing the installation to AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules, and issuing a compliance certificate. We supply the charger, cabling, conduit, weatherproof fittings, and mounting hardware. You choose the location; we sort the rest.

Most installations in Coorparoo and the surrounding suburbs take between two and four hours for a straightforward job on a single-storey home with a garage close to the switchboard.

When You Need This Service

The clearest sign is owning (or being about to own) an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle with no dedicated charging point at home. Other situations worth noting:

  • You have been using a standard 10-amp GPO (general power outlet) via an extension lead. This works, but it is slow and not designed for continuous overnight loads. Many vehicle manufacturers flag it as a warranty concern.
  • You recently moved into a Coorparoo, Camp Hill, or Greenslopes home and the previous owners had an EV charger removed, leaving an orphaned circuit that needs inspecting before reuse.
  • Your off-street parking has changed, such as a new carport build, and the old charger location no longer makes sense.
  • You are adding a second EV to the household and need a second charging point.

There is no strong seasonal pattern for the installation itself, though we do see a run of enquiries in January and February when new vehicles delivered before Christmas start clocking up kilometres and owners realise trickle charging is not keeping pace.

What It Costs in Brisbane

A typical home EV charger installation in the Brisbane inner south runs between $1,800 and $4,500 all up, including the charger unit, cabling, and labour.

What moves the price:

  • Cable run length. A switchboard two metres from your garage wall is straightforward. Thirty metres of conduit through a Queenslander subfloor to a detached carport costs more in materials and time.
  • Switchboard condition. Older boards in some pre-2000 homes in Annerley, Highgate Hill, or Dutton Park may not have a spare circuit breaker position or may need a safety upgrade before the charger circuit can be added. We flag this before quoting and do not proceed without your approval.
  • Charger model and speed. A single-phase 7.4 kW unit covers most home needs. A three-phase 11 kW or 22 kW charger costs more for the unit itself and may require a power upgrade if your property does not already have three-phase supply.
  • Access difficulty. Double-brick walls, tiled surfaces that need to be drilled through, or tight ceiling cavities in a lowset brick home add time.
  • Smart charging features. Wi-Fi enabled chargers with load management, solar integration readiness, or scheduled charging cost more than a basic unit but can save money over time.

What Is Included in the Quote (and What Is Not)

Our quotes include the charger unit, all cabling and conduit to the agreed location, mounting hardware, the switchboard circuit breaker, testing, and the electrical compliance certificate required under Queensland law.

What is typically quoted separately or flagged as a possible extra:

  • Switchboard upgrades if your existing board cannot safely accommodate the new circuit (we will tell you upfront)
  • Any patching or repainting of wall surfaces after cable routing
  • Permit applications if your property is in a strata or body corporate situation (that falls under our apartment service)
  • Significant concrete or masonry cutting if conduit needs to be concealed

We do not charge a call-out fee to quote, but we do ask for enough detail about your property so we can give you a number that sticks.

Is This the Right Service for Your Property?

Home EV charger installation suits you if:

  • You park on private land (your own driveway, garage, or carport)
  • You own the property, or have your landlord's written permission to install fixed electrical equipment
  • Your switchboard is in reasonable condition and has capacity for an additional circuit (we can check this on-site)
  • You want a permanent, faster charging solution rather than occasional top-ups from a power point

If you live in a unit or townhouse with shared parking, the apartment and strata service is a better fit. If your switchboard is genuinely past its useful life, a switchboard upgrade may need to happen first.

A Straight Note on Safety and Qualifications

EV charger installation is electrical work. In Queensland, it must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor and the installation must be tested and a compliance certificate issued. This is not optional, and no reputable installer will skip it.

A certificate protects you with your home insurer, satisfies your vehicle manufacturer's warranty requirements, and means the work has been inspected against the standard. If you are ever quoted a job with no mention of a certificate, treat that as a red flag.

We hold the required Queensland electrical contractor licence and issue a certificate on every job.

If you want a quote specific to your property, give us a call or send a message with your suburb, parking setup, and the EV model you are charging. That is usually enough to give you a reliable ballpark before we even visit.

Quick answers

Frequently asked.

How long does a home EV charger installation take in Brisbane?
Most straightforward installations on a single-storey home with a garage close to the switchboard take two to four hours. Longer cable runs, difficult access, or switchboard work can extend that. We give you a realistic time estimate when we quote, so you can plan around it.
Do I need council approval to install a home EV charger in Queensland?
In most cases, no. A standard residential EV charger installation is treated as ordinary electrical work and does not require a building approval in Queensland. You do need a licensed electrician to carry out the work and issue an electrical safety certificate. If your property is under body corporate rules, those internal approvals are a separate matter.
What charger speed do I actually need for home use?
A single-phase 7.4 kW charger is enough for most Brisbane households. It will fully charge a typical 60–80 kWh EV battery overnight. If you drive very high kilometres daily, have two EVs, or want to charge on surplus solar during the day, a three-phase 11 kW unit is worth considering. We can talk through your driving habits and recommend accordingly.
Can I install a home EV charger if I rent my property?
You need your landlord's written permission before any fixed electrical equipment is installed. Some landlords agree readily, particularly as EV chargers can add appeal to a rental property. We cannot install without evidence of permission, and we recommend getting that approval in writing before booking so there are no surprises on the day.
Will a home EV charger installation affect my home insurance?
It should not, provided the installation is done by a licensed electrician and a compliance certificate is issued. Insurers generally want to know major electrical work was done to code. An unlicensed installation or one with no certificate is the scenario most likely to cause a problem with a claim. Keep your certificate with your home documents.
My switchboard is quite old — will that be a problem?
It might be. Older switchboards common in pre-2000 homes across suburbs like Annerley, Highgate Hill, and Dutton Park sometimes lack spare circuit positions or use older wiring that needs attention before adding a high-draw circuit. We check the switchboard as part of quoting and will tell you plainly if an upgrade is needed before we can safely add a charger circuit.
